Paul Morris Community Service Award
2010 Paul Morris Community Service Award Nomination Form
The success
of public schools in large part hinges on the support of
local communities - public schools are in fact - "community schools." Communities
committed to excellent schools elect exemplary citizens to
govern the local education system through service on the school board.
FutureBuilders,
the non-profit education foundation of the Missouri School
Boards' Association, is pleased to offer a program designed
to recognize individuals who provide leadership to their
communities through school board service as well as other community service
activities. The Paul Morris Community Service Award has been established
by MSBA FutureBuilders to honor the memory of Paul Morris, a school board
member from Mt. Vernon, who was serving as President of MSBA when he passed
away on February 2, 2009. Paul devoted countless hours strengthening his
community and improving its schools through his volunteer work. Paul was
honored as Mt. Vernon's Citizen of the Year in 1987 for his service to the
community. Over the years he had served as president of the Mt. Vernon Chamber
of Commerce, chairman of Apple Butter Makin' Days, president of the Mt. Vernon
Rotary Club, as a member of the Barry-Lawrence Regional Library Board and
39th Judicial Circuit Bar committee, among others. At the time of his death
he had served on the Mt. Vernon R-5 Board of Education for nearly nine years
and on MSBA's Board of Directors for four years.
Members of MSBA are invited
to nominate a current or past public school board member
from Missouri who shows a commitment to community service for the Paul Morris
Community Service Award. Nominations for the 2010 award recipient will be accepted through
March 1, 2010. Up to seventeen nominees (limited to one nominee from each of
MSBA's seventeen regions) will be selected as award finalists. Finalists
will be chosen based on their demonstrated commitment to public education
as well as their community service activities. Finalists and the award recipient
will be recognized at the MSBA Awards Banquet on Friday, June 11, 2010 in
Columbia as part of the MSBA Leadership Summit. The recipient of the Paul
Morris Community Service Award will receive a $1,000 individual award and
an additional $1,000 award to be used by his/her school district for scholarships.
